Privacy Policy – School Companion

School Companion (“the App”) is a study and timetable helper for students at Kantonsschulen and similar schools. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use and protect your data.

1. Data we collect

When you use School Companion, we may collect the following data:

Account data

• Email address
• Password (stored only as a secure hash)
• Optional profile information (name, avatar, school, class)

App content you enter

• Timetable and lessons
• Exams, homework, deadlines and reminders
• Pomodoro sessions and study statistics
• Optional friends or study groups (friend codes, basic profile info)

Device and usage data

• Device type, operating system, app version
• Crash reports and basic analytics
• Notification tokens for reminders

We do not collect financial data or exact location (GPS). We do not display third-party advertising.

2. How we use your data

We use your data to:

• Provide the core functions of the App (timetable, exams, reminders, Pomodoro, groups)
• Sync your data across devices
• Send notifications that you have enabled
• Improve the App and fix bugs
• Maintain security and prevent abuse

We do not sell your data or share it with third parties for marketing.

3. Legal basis (EU / Switzerland)

If you are located in the EU or Switzerland, we process your data based on:

• Contract – to provide you with the App and its functions
• Legitimate interest – to maintain and improve the service
• Consent – for optional features such as notifications or analytics

You can withdraw your consent at any time in the app settings or on your device.

4. Third-party services

School Companion uses the following provider:

Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication, Firestore/Realtime Database, Firebase Storage, Cloud Functions, optional Crashlytics/Analytics)
Provider: Google LLC and its affiliates
Data may be stored on servers located in the EU or other regions
Google acts as our data processor under data protection agreements

We only share the minimum data necessary for these services to function.

5. Data storage and security

• Your data is stored securely through Firebase services
• We use encryption, authentication and access control
• We keep your data only as long as needed or required by law

6. Children’s privacy

The App is designed for students aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us so we can remove it.

7. Your rights

Depending on your country, you may have the right to:

• Access the data we store about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your account (“right to be forgotten”)
• Restrict or object to certain processing
• Receive a copy of your data in a portable format

You can delete most data directly in the app (e.g., exams, timetable, account). To request full account deletion or data access, contact us using the details below.

8. Data retention

If you delete your account, we will remove or anonymise your data within a reasonable time, except where retention is required for security or legal reasons (for example, temporary security logs).
